Take a look back at the live Zoom event in partnership with the Design & Crafts Council Ireland as part of the exhibition, InForm. InForm is a two-year long collaborative project between the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History and the Design and Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI). It culminates in a vibrant exhibition, which show-cases contemporary Irish ceramics and jewellery by twenty-two emerging makers, next to the Museum objects that inspired them.
To coincide with Heritage Week 2021, InForm Curator, Dr. Edith Andrees was joined by some of the emerging makers featured in the exhibition. They discussed their creative practice and their involvement in the two year collaborative project.
Jeweller Mark Newman joined the event to discuss the Irish thatch and ‘Brutalist’ architecture. Mark drew inspiration from a drawing from the Museum collections. The drawing illustrates the front elevation of a house in Baile an tSagairt, An Spidéal, Co. Galway, Ireland, 1930–1940. This drawing is part of an architectural survey of Irish houses, which was conducted by Swedish ethnologists following an invitation from the Irish Folklore Commission.
Ceramicist Jennifer Alford discussed the work, On Stage, which took direct inspiration from the early 20th century Rushlight and candleholder, from County Kerry, Ireland. Made of iron and sitting on a wooden base, the object is part of the Irish Folklife Collection at the National Museum of Ireland.
