This was a wild one. Jake Guentzel made his return to the lineup for the Penguins, which was certainly a welcome sight. This, by itself, was a milestone - Guentzel skated in his 300th career NHL game. The Penguins fell behind, 2-0, until Danton Heinen scored in his second-straight game. Then, Jeff Carter knotted things up, 2-2. Carter's tally was his 400th career NHL goal, and he became the seventh active player to reach that milestone. Jake Guentzel showed all the patience in the world to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead, tracking down a puck behind the net, out-waiting the Florida netminder Bobrovsky, and banking his shot in from behind the net off of a defenseman's shin pad. Evan Rodrigues increased Pittsburgh's lead with some determination at the front of the net, but then, Florida made things interesting. Ekblad scored twice to tie things, 4-4, and the game headed to overtime. At the end of regulation, Pittsburgh had a whopping 46 shots on goal, and had nine chances on the power play. Verhaeghe earned his second goal of the night to lift the Panthers to a victory. Pittsburgh completed their season-opening road trip, taking three of four points along the way. They now head back to Pittsburgh for the home opener on Saturday, October 16.
