LA PALMA volcano activity rumbles on as waves of lava engulfs homes in Spain's Canary Islands, as experts predict 'increased activity' in coming days.
A volcanologist with Spain's national geographic institute said on Wednesday, volcano activity was likely to increase inside La Palma's exclusion zone but lava flows were unlikely to reach the sea.
"We'll have... an increase in activity and we'll have some new lava flows, but fortunately, we have these lava flows in the area that we have previous lava flow," said volcanologist Stavros Meletudis Tsiogal.
"So they had to assimilate the lava flows and we didn't have any reach to the ocean," he added.
As of Wednesday, lava from the volcano had covered nearly 900 hectares (2,223) acres of land, destroying 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations.
More than 7,000 people have had to evacuate their homes so far.
