Manuel M. Ponce - "Malgre Tout/In Spite of Everything" for Left Hand Alone

Entertainment, Education and Demonstration
Kara Dahl Russell performs a work composed for the left hand alone. In 1900, Mexican composer Manuel Ponce composed this work inspired by, and in honor of Mexican sculptor Jesús Fructuoso Contreras Chávez, who has been called the most "representative sculptor of late 19th century Mexico". After the sculptor had to have his right hand amputated (due to complications from mistreated cancer), he went on to complete in 1898 his work "Malgre Tout (Nevertheless / In Spite of Everything)."

I want to thank concert pianist Ivan Ilic for inspiring me to seek out and perform works for the left hand alone, and his kindness, encouragement and supportive words. His performance of Godowsky's transcriptions of Chopin works for the left hand alone are inspiring. In addition to his acclaimed concert career, he is also a brilliant researcher, writer and conservator of forgotten or rarely played work. I encourage you to explore his youtube page:
