Project is currently being exhibited at The Cooper Union until November 25th
Plastic Architecture explores the potential for large-scale additive manufacturing (AM) technologies to disrupt the building industry. It further investigates the architectural demand for designing and producing ultra-lightweight concrete formwork for casting lightweight and geometrically complex concrete elements and high-performance building envelopes. This will help confront worldwide concerns regarding the depletion of natural resources, reduction in CO2 emissions, shortage in skilled labor, and the prolongment of building life cycles. Moreover, it will aid in the ease of material sourcing, construction and operation, demolition, and waste management. The capability to 3D print plastic parts at a large scale has the potential to revolutionize construction in a wide range of applications (including concrete formwork, façade panels, building envelopes, etc.) and will open the door to unprecedented geometric freedom in design.
