The Madras High Court on November 24, 2021 set aside the previous AIADMK government’s acquisition of Jayalalithaa’s residence in Poes Garden. It also directed that the keys of the house be handed over to Jayalalithaa’s legal heirs - Deepak and Deepa.

The verdict has come as a big blow to former Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and former Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, who had pushed the conversion of the property into a memorial for Jayalalithaa. The High Court judgment also exposed how the EPS government behaved – to take control of the property.

TNM’s Anna Isaac explains the legal and political battle behind Veda Nilayam’s acquisition.
