This is one of the most tragic sights in the history of the United States Navy. On the morning of January 14th 1969, the USS Enterprise CVN-65, also known as Big-E, was in the waters off the coast of Hawaii when a huge explosion took place aboard the carrier at 8:18 a.m. The cause of the explosion was a Mark-32 Zuni rocket, loaded on an F-4 Phantom 2. The warhead in the rocket overheated due to the exhaust coming from a nearby vehicle and detonated. The fire from the explosion sparked a series of other explosions because the nearby aircraft loaded with ordnance also caught fire. The major fire spread across the flight deck and even penetrated to the ship's interior. The Big-E's fire protection features failed to control the inferno, and it was the crew who worked resiliently to quench the fire, taking control of it in less than an hour. Recent experiences from the fire of the USS Forrestal CVA 59 also helped the sailors to deal with the situation in just 3 hours. The Enterprise lost 28 sailors and 15 aircraft, with 314 wounded, and thhe damage caused $126 million to the Navy.
