Hundreds of lives were shattered in a matter of seconds. Around 6.30 pm on Sunday, a suspension bridge across the Machu river in Morbi, a town in Gujarat, collapsed. CCTV visuals that caught the last moments show the cable snapping in an instant plunging those on the bridge into the river. Many could be seen climbing up the mangled wires in a desperate attempt to save themselves. Many more were in the river... some under the remains of the bridge. People on the banks and the nearby construction sites rushed to rescue the victims. The contractor in charge of renovation and maintenance - an Oreva Group firm - was allotted a year for the work but finished the project in 5 months.
The company had allegedly reopened the bridge without obtaining a fitness certificate. The Morbi municipal body claims they were not aware of the bridge reopening. The operator allegedly sold much more than the 100 tickets permitted, leading to overcrowding. The police have arrested 9 people, including Oreva officials.
