A backhoe is a multipurpose piece of construction equipment, most commonly used for excavations, that is referred to as a "backhoe" among contractors.
The digging bucket, or hoe, is attached to the rear of the cab.
The loader bucket is attached to the front side of the cab.
The operator sits in a swivel seat at the top of the cab to allow him to operate the equipment from the rear or front of the machine.
Learning to control a backhoe can take about two weeks. However, it will take about a year for me to feel comfortable.
You will reach a point where you can move the machine like your own body. You'd be surprised how delicate the steering is, they can turn as fast as a car. Many of the courses you can take are 6 weeks long. You learn about the machines and all the basics, but you really need a lot of time in the seat to improve.
To get started:
Sit firmly in the cab and familiarize yourself with the controls. There are many gears, levers, and functions that you should know about. And you must make all of them work at the same time. It's a lot of hand-eye coordination. The key is to feel the hydraulics.
First, lower the outriggers to stabilize the backhoe and release the boom lock.
Push the left control forward to extend the backhoe arm. Push the right control to the right to open the cube.
Know where you are digging.
You must keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings. A backhoe is a huge piece of machinery and it's easy to backtrack into things.
Be especially careful if you are digging around utilities. Push the right control forward to lower the arm.
Push the right control to the left to fold the bucket inward, lowering it to the ground to collect the soil. It's generally a good idea to go at an angle.
What Training Do I Need to Operate a Backhoe?
The requirements for becoming a backhoe operator will vary widely depending on your employer. Some employers will provide you with on-the-job training if you have some construction experience and a commercial driver’s license.
However, because operating a backhoe can be dangerous, many employers will require a certificate or other applicable training. Receiving training from a trade or vocational school can really help your application to stand out amongst other job seekers when applying for jobs.
